What are Conveyors?

A belt conveyor consists of two or more pulleys, with a continuous loop of material - the conveyor belt - that rotates about them. One or both of the pulleys are powered, moving the belt and the material on the belt forward. The powered pulley is called the drive pulley while the unpowered pulley is called the idler. There are two main industrial classes of belt conveyors; Those in general material handling such as those moving boxes along inside a factory and bulk material handling such as those used to transport industrial and agricultural materials, such as grain, coal, ores, etc. generally in outdoor locations. Generally companies providing general material handling type belt conveyors do not provide the conveyors for bulk material handling. In addition there are a number of commercial applications of belt conveyors such as those in grocery stores.
The belt consists of one or more layers of material they can be made out of rubber. Many belts in general material handling have two layers. An under layer of material to provide linear strength and shape called a carcass and an over layer called the cover. The carcass is often a cotton or plastic web or mesh. The cover is often various rubber or plastic compounds specified by use of the belt. Covers can be made from more exotic materials for unusual applications such as silicone for heat or gum rubber when traction is essential.

Types of Conveyor Systems

We will begin with mechanical vertical lifts. These are usually vertical platform lifts designed to handle heavy (30,000 lbs or more) and many times bulky, oversized loads. The carriage (compartment area where the actual items being transported sit) is lifted and lowered by heavy roller chain attached to a mechanical lifting mechanism. Vertical lifts are ideal for transporting large, heavy loads two or more levels and also high volume automated systems or frequent-use applications. The benefit of loading and unloading items from all four sides on the better designed vertical lifts is very appealing.
Hydraulic conveyors, as the name implies, lifts the material on the carriage via hydraulic cylinders instead of mechanical lifting mechanisms. Therefore a hydraulic lift is often more quiet and smooth during operation. Hydraulic lifts are quite adaptable for mezzanines, balconies, through floor and inside and outside applications. Depending on their intended use, many hydraulic lifts are designed smaller and more compact than mechanical lifts. The benefit these units provide is they can be often delivered as a complete product ready for fast, easy, one-day installation, thus keeping downtime to a minimum.

History of the Conveyor System

Primitive conveyor belts were used since 19th century. In 1901, Sandvik invented and started the production of the Steel Conveyor belts. In 1905 Richard Sutcliffe invented the first conveyor belts for use in coal mines which revolutionized the mining industry. In 1913, Henry Ford introduced Conveyor belt-based assembly-line in Ford Motor Company's Rouge factory in Dearborne Michigan.
